My feminine winter {a menstrual story}

by Gabriella Guglielminotti Trivel

The appeal of my inner winter

Last week I was waiting for my feminine cycle to start and I was doing my best to enjoy the end of my feminine autumn; at the same time I was really looking forward to experiencing my feminine winter. My winter inner season is the moment when I enjoy the most the connection with my soul and can experience delightful moments of inner peace and bliss. I have always appreciated the time of the month when I bleed, even when I was younger and unaware of my inner seasons and its different energies, but now that I am conscious of what happens to me every month on an energetic, emotional and psychological level, I wait for my winters with trepidation for all the goodies that
come with it.

Last Thursday I could feel that my autumn was coming to an end and I could feel that it was a question of hours. I was calmly waiting for the moment of release and bliss that happens almost every month. As my awareness has developed so much these days, I can tell from so many physical signs that I am approaching the moment of my winter. It is such a joy to follow my body closely.

As my last days of autumn had been a bit agitated and intense, I was anticipating in my mind the wonderful moment of feeling liberated and released of the inner tension and being able to emotionally, psychologically and physically expand in my body and inner being. I can tell in the last hour or so that my mind becomes quieter and I start feeling more positive and calmer, as calm as I am after a two weeks’ holiday! When that happens I know that my only duty is paying close attention to everything that shows up in my mind, body and spirit especially in my dreams. It is like having an inner party where everything is allowed and I am the only participant where I can dictate my rules and have fun … I appreciate my time on my own even more than normal and feel sacred in a way that I don’t feel in any other time of the month. I become a goddess and respect my authority. My inner voice becomes very loud and assertive and I start having insight after insight after insight about myself, life, my relationships, my behaviour, my decisions, etc.

Out of space and time …

I like feeling spaced out and not totally connected with everybody around me and every day life. I allow myself to expand and experience a different dimension: my dimension! I do my best to listen to my body impulses and follow them, like eating, sleeping, resting, meditating and do certain activities that are more introspective like writing, walking in nature, being idle and allowing the mind to flow … One of the most nurturing thing for me is sitting in the sun and basking like a cat allowing all my muscles to relax feeling the warmth of the sun slowly going into my skin and body.

I love flying and this time is even more magical when I am in my winter, but I allow my partner to be the pilot in charge and fly me, so that I can enjoy the landscape and allow my spirit to expand and dream among the clouds! I have learnt to go with the flow of my winter and respect it, instead of being annoyed because I can’t remember things, words, I tend to be late, drop things and nothing seems to me to be so important any more. The biggest impact of my winter is on the first two days, then little by little it slowly finds its way out and I can feel my mind going back to normal and my body wanting to move more and be active again. Every winter has got its delights, gifts, lessons, insights, revelations, healing moments, new ideas and surprises.

The feminine winter, the apex of the feminine.

It is a time to be feminine, nurture myself, feed my body, love my being and listen to my spirit. It is a time to be receptive and still and allow the supra-natural to reveal itself with grace. It is a time to deepen my intimate relationship and allow my partner into my secrets and inner body in all senses. I can feel the power of the feminine energy, all its depth, truth, clarity and wisdom. So many nuances become evident and the inner landscape gets very colourful indeed. I am in my forties and am aware that my winters might start to be less frequent in the next few years, therefore I am cherishing them as best as I can, being thankful for the exquisite opportunity of being intimate with my soul and inner being. It is such a pleasure to be a woman and able to share my knowledge and experience with other women in my work as a Feminine Cycle Consultant and Women’s Coach. I feel a woman of the XXI century in total evolution, are you one of them too?

Below are some suggestions of how to work with the different energy inherent in each week of your cycle. This list is by no mean exhaustive and we would encourage you to be creative and adventurous in honouring your own individual cycle. Part of the journey is finding your own unique expression of your cycle and ways to support your own needs. Sharing your ways of being with your cycle in circle with other women is a great way to gather new ideas and ways of honouring yourself and others.

Week One:

It is often difficult to find time to rest and retreat from our busy lives. The demands of family life and work can feel like obstacles to creating quiet sacred space for you to rest. For some women this may feel like an unwarranted luxury that they cannot afford themselves. However, retreat time does not need to be three solid days alone. Of course if you can create this then fantastic, but for many of us we need to find creative ways to lessen our daily activities and finding means to honour ourselves. We can create ways of taking ourselves out of the busy routines of everyday life and with practice those around will grow more accustomed to our need for retreat. After all, a well nurtured mother is able to hold her family with more grace and ease than someone tired and unhappy without time for refueling and rest. Having a relaxing bath by candle light or ensuring the freezer is stocked with dinner for a few nights are great ways to create a bit of space or ease. Ensuring that you don’t schedule in big events or parties is another good idea in honouring your need to be less social.

Some women choose to create a bleeding necklace to wear or make a mooonstick as an expression of their prayers for the coming cycle. Wearing red or choosing special jewellery to wear can also let others know that this is your bleeding time. Paying particular attention to your dreams and setting an intention to remember them is another great way to tap into your night time wisdom. Drawing, crafting, journaling or meditating are also other great ways to slow down and reflect. Some women choose their bleeding time to rearrange their altar or read that great novel they have been saving! It is a time to go slowly and be gentle with yourself. By quietening we open ourselves to hear the messages of our body, our heart and our spirit. Want to read more….

The story of the blood was silent…

If we don’t talk about our blood, are we collaborating with an oppressive silence? Why is it so much easier to talk about sex than it is to talk about menstruation? When we gather in circle in the Red Tent, we share stories of this intimate yet ubiquitous women’s experience—and turn the cultural prohibition on its head.

Join us in the virtual “Red Tent” for today’s episode of Red Tent TV.

After you’ve watched the episode, I’d love to know…

Why do you think it is important to talk about menstruation?

Leah’s First Period Ceremony

by DeAnna L’am

Leah called me to let me know she has just got her period! Being a heart-auntie to her I was delighted, and deeply touched that she chose to share this with me… Leah excitedly relayed the experience over the phone, told me of her Moms special attentions, and her bounty of gifts that included a red ruby necklace, a journal, fragrant bath salts, a red candle, a box of soothing teas, and many beautifully printed cloth pads. Leah continued to say that she chose to have a ceremony with only her Mom and myself present! I was lost for words…

women7-Cropped

The date was set, and Leah’s Mom & I were busy planning. We knew we wanted the ceremony to take place in nature, and chose a special grove of Redwoods, which we both love, as our designated spot. We explored what we would want to convey to Leah, and planned ceremonial activities to reflect each of the points we discussed. This was exciting!

The grove welcomed us with warm sunshine, a slight breeze, and deep quiet. We walked softly on the forest floor: a veteran cycling woman, a woman who stopped bleeding, and a girl who just started her first cycle…

We draped red fabrics over lower branches to create an entrance to our sacred place: a cave-like hollow at the base of a huge Grandma Redwood tree. Leah explored the surrounding while we prepared the womb-like tree hollow. We placed a large red fabric on the ground, and created an altar in the center, honoring each of the 4 directions and elements: Feathers in the East to represent Air; A red candle in the South to represent Fire; Sea shells in the West represented Water, and crystals in the North brought Earth to complete the circle, while red flowers graced the center.

Everything was ready. We called Leah to the opening of the tree hollow, smudged each other with pungent sage to clear the old and welcome the new, and asked each other: ‘How do you enter the circle?’ To which we each answered: “In perfect love and perfect trust!”

Inside our cozy womb space we started with a song, and then Leah’s Mom and I each shared with her the story of our first period. Leah then told her fresh new story for the first time in sacred circle.

Each of us adult women shared some of the confusions or questions we had as girls about menstruation and what we learned over the years, which in turn allowed Leah to ask us some of her own questions and receive answers.

We then each presented Leah with a gift. Her Mom gifted her with a Moon Calendar that shows all phases of the moon, for an entire year, on one beautiful poster. Leah marked her first MoonTime by filling in the full moon image with a red pen, as her flow started on the day of the full moon! I presented Leah with a red bracelet and a red rose.

To symbolize Leah’s transition from girlhood to womanhood, her Mom and I created a gateway with arms stretched up and hands clasped together. We invited Leah to ponder what she would like to leave behind as she moves through the gate, and what was she hoping to move toward.

When she was ready, we asked Leah to say Goodbye to an object she brought to represent her childhood, and to discard of it anywhere she chooses. Leah placed a stuffed animal, which she had since she was a baby, in a small cavity inside a nearby redwood, and stood there a moment, saying Goodbye to it…

She then turned toward the open gateway, which her mom and I were embodying, and regally walked through to ‘The Other Side’ representing Womanhood. Our cheers and hugs lasted for a long time…

The time for blessings arrived! We opened a pomegranate juice bottle and poured a few drops on Mother Earth, speaking words of blessing for Her well being. Filling our own glasses with beautiful crimson liquid, we each spoke heartfelt blessing to Leah, honoring her as a newly cycling sister. We shared yummy dark chocolate to enrich and sweeten the moment, which we dipped into our juice and devoured!

It was time to close the circle by thanking and releasing the four directions & four elements whom we welcomed at the opening. While we gathered and packed our altar, Leah was quietly communing with a redwood tree. A shift seemed to have taken place in her. She was still a girl, but a sense of depth seems to have settled in and around her, that will only deepen and grow through her many years of cycling.

(* Leah is a pseudo-name I gave my young friend to protect her privacy)
